While not all stations are fully accessible, the CTA is actively working to improve accessibility through its All Stations Accessibility Program (ASAP).
CTA L accessibility features for wheelchair users
- Elevators and Ramps: Many “L” stations are equipped with elevators and/or ramps to provide access to platforms.
- Automated Announcements: Both audio and visual announcements are provided on trains and at stations, including stop and route information.
- Priority Seating: Designated priority seating areas are available on trains, often near the front and adjacent to the side doors.
- Wheelchair Securement: Train cars have areas where wheelchairs can be secured, although tie-downs are not available.
- Gap Fillers: Portable ramps (gap fillers) are used to bridge the gap between the platform and the train car.
- Accessible Fare Gates: Wheelchair accessible fare gates are available at stations.
- Braille and Large Print Signage: Signage with Braille and large print is available at stations.
- Customer Assistance: CTA personnel and customer assistance buttons are available at every rail station.
Ongoing Improvements
- The CTA is actively working to make all “L” stations accessible through the All Stations Accessibility Program (ASAP).
- This program includes the installation of elevators, ramps, and other accessibility features at currently inaccessible stations.
- The CTA is replacing older rail cars with new ones that include improved accessibility features, such as larger accessible doors and more securement areas.
