Semmeringbahn Railway Facilities

Mürzzuschlag Railway Station is the southern end of the Semmeringbahn Railway in Austria. It’s a significant site in the history of technology and Train Sim World railways. 

Significance

  • UNESCO World Heritage Site – The station is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Semmering Railway, which was the first mountain railway in the world when it opened in 1854. 
  • Railway history – The station’s workshops, boilerhouses, and roundhouse are the last remaining from the railway’s early days. 
  • Architectural significance – The station’s architecture is part of the railway station ensemble, which is protected as a monument. 

Museum

  • The Südbahnmuseum Mürzzuschlag is a railway museum in the former train depot at the station. It has exhibits of former ÖBB locomotives and vehicles from the Technical Museum Vienna.
  • The museum halls are listed as historically significant and have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009.

Tunnel

The Semmering Base Tunnel is under construction between Gloggnitz and Mürzzuschlag. The new route will be shorter and faster than the existing route.
