BR Class 52 Western: Diesel Locomotive is an add-on developed and maintained by Dovetail Games, for their TSW Console and PC platforms and was released on October 22, 2020 for the Train Sim World 2018 video game. BR Class 52, also known as the Western, was a class of 74 diesel-hydraulic locomotives built for British Railways’ Western Region between 1961 and 1964.
Legacy – The Class 52 is considered a revolutionary locomotive and is still popular with fans who attend heritage lines.
Features – The Class 52 was based on German diesel hydraulic technology and had two Maybach MD655 engines, each with 12 cylinders. It had a maximum speed of 90 miles per hour, but unofficial records claim it reached speeds of 110 miles per hour.
Names – All the locomotives were given two-word names that began with Western, such as Western Ranger and Western Lady. They were also known as Wizzos and Thousands.
Service – The Class 52 was used on top-link expresses from London Paddington and in Great Western territory. It was the standard for GWR express operation in the 1960s and 1970s.
Withdrawal – The final Class 52 locomotives were withdrawn from service between 1973 and 1977. Seven were preserved, and the rest were scrapped.
