Clinchfield Railroad Company

The Clinchfield Railroad (CRR) was a railroad that transported coal and freight from Virginia and Kentucky to South Carolina featured in Train Sim World. It was a holding company for the Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio Railway (CC&O). 

History:

  • The Clinchfield Railroad was built between 1906 and 1915. 
  • The CC&O was the original name of the railroad. 
  • The CRR was the reporting mark for the Clinchfield Railroad from 1924 to 1986. 
  • In 1983, the railroad became part of the Seaboard System Railroad (SBD). 
  • In 1986, the Seaboard System changed its name to CSX Transportation. 

Features: 

  • The Clinchfield Railroad was 277 miles long.
  • It crossed four watersheds.
  • It had 55 tunnels.
  • It connected with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway at Elkhorn City, Kentucky.
  • It connected with the Atlantic Coast Line and Southern Railway at Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Passenger service: 

  • The Clinchfield Railroad had passenger trains, but passenger service ended in 1954.

Significance: 

  • The Clinchfield Railroad was one of the most profitable railroads in the United States.
