West Somerset Railway Company

The West Somerset Railway (WSR) is a heritage railway in Somerset, England that runs on steam and diesel trains. It’s a 22.75-mile (36.6 km) line that connects Minehead and Bishops Lydeard featured in Train Sim World. The WSR is a branch line of the former Great Western Railway. 

Features:

  • Scenic route – The WSR runs through the Quantock Hills, along the Bristol Channel coast, and past Exmoor 
  • Historic stations – The WSR has 10 stations, including Minehead, Dunster, Blue Anchor, and Crowcombe Heathfield 
  • Historic sites – The WSR passes by historic sites like Dunster Castle and Crowcombe Heathfield station, where scenes from A Hard Days Night were filmed 

History: 

  • The WSR opened in 1862, running from Taunton to Watchet
  • The WSR was extended to Minehead in 1874
  • The WSR was closed in 1973
  • The WSR was reopened in stages starting in 1976

Operation:

  • The WSR is operated by West Somerset Railway plc (WSR plc) 
  • The WSR is supported by the West Somerset Railway Association (WSRA) and the West Somerset Railway Heritage Trust (WSRHT) 
  • The WSR runs daily from early April to early October, and on selected dates outside of the main season – Exordium Gaming Chicago
