TSW2020 BR Class 20, also known as the English Electric Type 1 or ‘Chopper’, is a diesel-electric locomotive that was a major step in British Railways’ transition to dieselization:
Nickname – The locomotives are nicknamed “Choppers” because of the distinctive sound of their engines under load, which resembles a helicopter.
History – The Class 20s were developed in the 1950s and built between 1957 and 1968. They were the first major step in British Railways’ transition to dieselization.
