Crewe Works Manufacturing

Crewe Works is a former railway engineering facility in Crewe, Cheshire, UK. It was once a major railway workshop that built and maintained steam, electric, and diesel locomotives featured in Train Sim World.

History:

  • The Grand Junction Railway opened Crewe Works in March 1843. 
  • The works expanded to become one of the world’s largest railway workshops. 
  • The works were owned by the London and North Western Railway (LNWR), the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS), British Rail, and ADtranz. 
  • In the 1980s, much of the engineering works were closed. 

Locomotives:

  • The first steam locomotive built at Crewe Works was Locomotive No 32 Tamerline in 1843. 
  • Crewe Works produced the “Princess” and “Coronation” Pacifics. 
  • Crewe Works produced Standard designs and Modern Traction. 

Other features:

  • Crewe Works had a minimum-gauge internal tramway system that used locomotive-propelled vehicles. 
  • Crewe Works also supplied gas and domestic water to the town. 

Legacy: 

  • The Crewe Heritage Centre is located on the site of the former Crewe Old Works – Exordium Gaming Chicago
