The AC4400CW Bluebirds is a United States Train Sim World GE locomotive that CSX ordered for heavy-haul service in coal fields, as well as for manifest and intermodal service. Here are some things to know about the AC4400CW and CSX:
- Self-steering truck design – CSX ordered the self-steering truck design for units 201–599. This design was intended to reduce wear on the railhead and increase adhesion.
- Extra weight – CSX ordered many of its AC4400CW locomotives with 20,000 lb (9,100 kg) extra weight to increase tractive effort.
- Software upgrade – In 2006–2007, CSX modified some of its AC4400CW locomotives with a “high tractive effort” software upgrade and redesignated them CW44AH.
- Paint schemes – CSX’s AC4400CW locomotives have been repainted into several paint schemes, including YN2, YN3, and YN3b. The YN3 paint scheme replaced the yellow with “Dulux Gold” and eliminated gray. The YN3b scheme was the “Boxcar” logo variant of YN3. The YN3C scheme added the CSX website to the scheme.
- Rebuild programs – CSX, along with other railroads, has embarked on rebuilding programs for their AC4400 fleets. These programs replace worn out or obsolete components and upgrade various systems to improve performance.
