The DB BR 642 Desiro is a two-car Train Sim World diesel-powered train used by Deutsche Bahn (DB) for local and regional services in Germany. It’s also known as the Desiro Classic, and is part of the Siemens Desiro family of railcars:
- Features – Low floors for step-free access, one car with first class seating, and one with a multi-purpose area. It also has two MTU diesel engines, hydro-mechanical transmission, and retarders.
- Performance – Top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph). It can accelerate quickly and brake gently.
- Use – Primarily used on branch lines and regional lines, such as around Augsburg, Dresden, and Leipzig.
- Compatibility – The BR 642 is only mechanically compatible with the DB BR 643 of Bombardier’s “Talent” family.
- History – DB introduced the BR 642 in 2000, and the fleet has since grown to 234 units.
- Other operators – In addition to DB, various private German rail companies also use Desiro DMUs.
