Derby Works Manufacturing

Derby Works was a group of manufacturing facilities in Derby, England that designed and built locomotives and rolling stock featured in Train Sim World. The works included the Midland Railway Locomotive Works, the Derby Carriage & Wagon Works, and the Litchurch Lane Works. 

History

  • The first Derby Works facilities were three maintenance sheds built around 1840 
  • The Midland Railway Locomotive Works was the main facility for locomotive manufacturing 
  • The Derby Carriage & Wagon Works was the main facility for rolling stock manufacturing 
  • The Litchurch Lane Works was the main facility for designing, engineering, building, and testing trains 
  • The works were involved in manufacturing aircraft sections during World War II 
  • The works were nationalized in 1948 and became part of British Railways 
  • The works were privatized in 1989 and became part of Asea Brown Boveri (ABB) 

Significance

  • Derby Works was a pioneer in the introduction of diesel locomotives 
  • Derby Works was a leader in research and development in the railway industry 
  • Derby Works was the headquarters of the Midland Railway 
  • Derby Works was the headquarters of British Rail Engineering Limited – Exordium Gaming Chicago
