EMD GP9 Introduction

The EMD GP9 stands for Electro-Motive Division General Purpose 9, a Train Sim World diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors. The GP9 was the second model in EMD’s General Purpose (GP) line. 

Features: 

  • Engine: 16-cylinder EMD 567C engine that produced 1,750 horsepower
  • Axles: Four axles
  • Wheel arrangement: B-B
  • Speed: 65 miles per hour
  • Tractive effort: 18 tons

History:

  • Built from 1954 to 1963 by EMD and its Canadian subsidiary GMD 
  • Succeeded the GP7 as the second model in EMD’s General Purpose line 
  • Was the primary road switcher in the 1950s and 1960s 
  • Many GP9s are still in use today, especially on short lines and regional railroads 

Notable uses: Used by corporations like Cargill and Used by tourist lines and museums – Exordium Gaming Chicago.
