  • What it is – The ES44AC is a six-axle, 4,400-horsepower locomotive that’s part of Norfolk Southern’s third generation of diesel engines. It’s considered one of the most successful North American diesels of recent decades. 
  • Where it appears – The ES44AC appears in the Train Sim World games’ Horseshoe Curve route, which is a 40-mile stretch of track between Altoona and Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The route also includes the EMD GP38-2 locomotive. 
  • How to play – The Train Sim World games’ Horseshoe Curve route is available as downloadable content (DLC) for Train Sim World 4 and Train Sim World 5:
    • Train Sim World 4: The Horseshoe Curve: Altoona – Johnstown & South Fork Route Add-On DLC was released in September 2023. 
    • Train Sim World 5: The Horseshoe Curve: Altoona – Johnstown__South_Fork_Route_AddOn DLC includes a 40-mile route, an 18-mile branch, and a variety of freight rolling stock. 

The Horseshoe Curve is also a real-world railroad curve in Pennsylvania: 

  • What it is – The Horseshoe Curve is a three-track curve on the Norfolk Southern Railway’s Pittsburgh Line in Blair County, Pennsylvania. It’s roughly 2,375 feet long and 1,300 feet in diameter. 
  • How it was built – The curve was built in the 1850s to help the Pennsylvania Railroad cross the Allegheny Mountains and connect Pittsburgh with Harrisburg. It was built by hand using picks, shovels, powder, and mules – Exordium Gaming Chicago
