Ownership – The Long Island Rail Road is owned by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The Pennsylvania Railroad owned the LIRR for most of the 20th century, but sold it to the state in 1966.
Service – The Long Island Rail Road runs on 11 branches and serves 126 stations in Nassau and Suffolk counties, Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. Many trains start or end at Penn Station or Grand Central Madison in Manhattan, while others start or end at Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn, or at Hunterpoint Avenue or Long Island City in Queens.
