Rail Head Treatment Train: Diesel Locomotive is a rolling stock add-on developed and maintained by Dovetail Games, for their Console and PC platforms and was released on October 4, 2022 for the Train Sim World 3 video game. A Rail Head Treatment Train (RHTT) in TSW3 is a train that cleans and treats railway tracks to make them safe for trains to pass:
- Cleaning – RHTTs use high-pressure water jets to remove leaves and other debris from the rails.
- Treating – RHTTs apply a paste called Sandite, which is a mixture of sand, aluminum, and adhesive, to the rails. They may also apply an adhesion modifier, which is a mixture of suspension gel, sand, and steel or iron shot.
RHTTs run at night and between scheduled daytime services during the autumn months to prevent rail contamination from building up. They are top and tailed, except for one circuit based in Inverness. Some circuits can be as long as 20 hours.
RHTTs have been successful in reducing the number of poor adhesion incidents. However, they are not the only solution, and other measures are being taken to reduce the maintenance burden on train operating companies. One such measure is to remove some of the large trees that line the cutting and embankment sides.
