Union Pacific Railroad Company

The Union Pacific Railroad (UP) is a United States freight railroad that connects 23 states in the western United States featured in Train Sim World. It’s the second largest railroad in the country, and is a key part of the global supply chain. 

How it was built: 

  • The Union Pacific Railroad was built in the 1860s as part of the first transcontinental railroad in the United States.
  • The Pacific Railway Act of 1862 authorized the construction of the railroad.
  • The Union Pacific Railroad was built westward from Omaha, Nebraska, while the Central Pacific Railroad was built eastward from Sacramento, California.
  • The two railroads met at Promontory Summit, Utah on May 10, 1869.

What it did:

  • The Union Pacific Railroad connected the eastern rail network with California. 
  • It played a vital role in westward expansion, making travel, trade, and communication easier across the country. 
  • It reduced the time it took to travel across the country from months to weeks. 

What it is now:

  • The Union Pacific Railroad is the main operating company of Union Pacific Corporation. 
  • It operates over 32,200 miles of routes and has 8,300 locomotives. 
  • It connects to Canada’s rail systems and is the only railroad that serves all six major Mexico gateways.
