Cajon Pass Railway Facilities

Barstow Yard is a railroad classification yard in Barstow, Cajon Pass that handles freight traffic to and from Southern California in Train Sim World. It’s a major transportation hub on the BNSF Southern Transcon. 

How it got its start 

  • The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF) built a southern transcontinental railroad connection through the Mojave Desert at the site of Barstow
  • In the 1970s, AT&SF expanded the railroad facilities into a large flat facility
  • In 1995, AT&SF merged with the Burlington Northern Railroad (BN) to form the BNSF Railway

The Barstow International Gateway

  • The Barstow International Gateway is a $1.5 billion investment at the Barstow Yard 
  • It will allow BNSF to move international freight directly from the ports inland to Barstow by rail 
  • It will reduce truck traffic and freeway congestion 
  • It will create jobs and be a catalyst for a more sustainable freight system 

Barstow’s significance 

  • Barstow was founded as a railway town and continues to be a major logistical center for material entering and leaving Los Angeles
