The British Rail Class 33, also known as the BRCW Type 3 or Crompton, is a class of diesel-electric locomotives built for the Southern Region of British Railways.
Preservation – Today, 24 examples of the Class 33 survive and are still used on the main line and at heritage railways.
Specifications – 98 locomotives were built between 1960 and 1962 by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company. They had a top speed of 85 miles per hour, a power output of 1,550 brake horsepower, and a fuel capacity of 800 imperial gallons.
Nickname – The locomotives were nicknamed Cromptons because of the Crompton Parkinson electrical equipment installed in them.
History – The Class 33s were the first BR diesel locomotives to have electric train heating. Some were modified to operate on the Waterloo to Weymouth service, where they were nicknamed Bagpipes because of the jumper cables used for push-pull operation.
